The American film star and singer Judy Garland (1922-1969) was a little Mozart of song and dance. Of all the child stars who came out of the thirties, a classic period for talented moppets, only Judy Garland somehow survived as a star of the first magnitude - a Lady Lazarus who kept rising from the dead from countless suicide attempts and broken marriages and nervous breakdowns and neurotic battles with weight and sleep and drugs. One cannot help wondering what kind of life Judy might have led, what kind of grown-up she might have become, had she not spent the most hopeful and the most vulnerable years of a girl’s life singing not for live audiences of unexacting admirers, but for relentlessly exacting producers, directors, arrangers, coaches, cameramen, costumers, accountants and dietitians on the lot at MGM. Between 1935 and 1951, between the ages of thirteen and twenty—nine, Judy made thirty-odd pictures. They made her famous and rich. Estimates of her lifetime earnings agree on a figure of about ten million dollars. But the grind of making pictures left her no time to savor the fruit of her success, or to learn how to conserve it. She died broke.

A story about the illusion of getting rich in Romania. In a country where stories of striking it rich are everywhere, anyone thinks such a thing is not only possible, but it's easily achievable. The storyline follows two destinies: one is of a young couple, Marius and Cosmina. Marius wrote an imaginary name on a lottery promotion ticket just to drag Cosmina. And the draw makes him the winner. The other is of two adults. Because of their lack of knowledge when it comes to modern technology, they get fooled by e-mail spam, fall for a false online lottery and loose their last savings. The stories meet at the end, when they loose all hope and refuse their only chance of getting rich. Finally we realize that the illusion of becoming rich puts ordinary people in extraordinary situations.

Pianist Steve Kuhn, accompanied by David Finck and Billy Drummond, explore classical works by a number of top composers from the 19th and 20th centuries on this Japanese release, though they are used as a launching pad for improvisation. Maurice Ravel's "Pavane for a Dead Princess" is recast as a soft samba, also incorporating a bit of an earlier standard that was derived from the French Impressionist's piece, "The Lamp Is Low." Chopin is obviously one of Kuhn's favorite classical composers, as three of his features, highlighted by a dreamy setting of "Nocturne in E Flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2." He brightens the tempo of Claude Debussy's "Reverie" while retaining its lyricism, while slowing Johannes Brahms' "Lullaby" to a crawl and demonstrating how a master jazz pianist utilizes space as an element of improvisation.

The Happenings are best-known for their hit single "See You in September," which is a sunny slice of sunshine pop featuring happy, bouncy vocals and intricate harmonies reminiscent of great white doo wop groups like the Four Seasons and the Tokens, who were not-so-coincidentally the Happenings' mentors and producers. Collectables has reissued both of the Happenings' records on one disc: 1966's The Happenings and 1967's Psycle. Both discs feature the stunning vocal gymnastics of their hit single and their updated doo wop sound coated with an easy listening gloss of strings on a not-very-thick Wall of Sound. Most of the songs on their debut were written by the members of the Tokens and are not bad but not that memorable, as they follow the formula of their hit but pale in comparison. An exception to this is the strange "You're in a Bad Way," which is a spooky track filled with death-related imagery that sports a surprisingly funky backbeat.

This is another of Conniff's "two-fer" offerings that reflects great listening, featuring great variety in the song selections. Of course, "Somewhere My Love" is Ray's most successful recording ever, and one of my personal favorites of all time, "Three Coins in the Fountain," tops it off for me. For real variety, compare these selections to the lightheartedness of "King of the Road" and "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport."
