The steady increase in recordings of his music has now established Suk as one of the great musical poets of the early 20th century. Too much is made of his affinities with his teacher and father-in-law, Dvorák; for his own part, Dvorák never imposed his personality on his pupils and Suk's mature music owes him little more than a respect for craft and an extraordinarily well developed ear for orchestral colour. His affinities in the five-movement A Summer's Tale, completed in 1909 – a magnificent successor to his profound Asrael Symphony – reflect Debussy and parallel the music of his friend Sibelius and Holst, but underpinning the musical language is a profound originality energising both form and timbre.
Mackerras's recording joins a select band: Šejna's vintage performance on Supraphon and Pešek's inspired rendition with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic; his is an equal to them both and the Czech Philharmonic's playing is both aspiring and inspiring. While their reading is suffused with a feeling for the work's myriad orchestral colours, they recognise that Suk's music is much more than atmosphere. In particular they excel in their handling of the drama and overwhelming emotional urgency of this remarkable, big-boned symphonic poem.

Jan Roth’s second album "Kleinod" will be released on May 2018. Four years after his gorgous debut "L.O.W." Roth delivers a real gem in the best sense of the word. Personally valuable, with light patina, various scratches, and one or two significant dents. Loaded with important stories and memories, with dignity and full of love, "Kleinod" has become a band album. The album of a band, however, whose members prefer to leave space for each other. Roth's unobtrusive piano unites the seven other instruments played on the album; but more as an underlying texture in the background. His "all-time-favourite" bass player Alex Binder, and the "amazing" drummer Maximilian Stadtfeld, lend hand to the songs, with their airy playing, helping set the tone for the rest of Roth's album.

Alec Roth's new oratorio, A Time to Dance, is a celebration of times and seasons. Jeffrey Skidmore and Ex Cathedra, who gave the premiere of the work in 2012, recreate the sheer exuberance of that live performance on this recording. The oratorio is paired with Roth's Magnificat and Nunc dimittis (Hatfield Service) and Men & Angels, a clever setting of John Donne's Antiphon "Praised be the God of love."

The English composer Alec Roth has been active for several decades and collaborated with Indian novelist Vikram Seth on an opera in the 1990s. Here he seems to tread into the profitable choral music territory mined by John Rutter. Although he is in no way a clone of Rutter, your reactions to that composer may give you an idea of how you'll feel about the Roth works here.

The French conductor François-Xavier Roth was born in France in 1971 and studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique. In October 2000 he won joint first prize at the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London, following which he was appointed for two seasons assistant conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra. From 2000 to 2002 he was also assistant conductor with the Caen Orchestra. In 2003 François-Xavier Roth created the chamber orchestra Les Siècles (The Centuries), combining period and modern instruments, an orchestra which covers a vast repertoire from Baroque to contemporary music.

Immortalized in Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece “Death in Venice”, Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 (with its unforgettable Adagietto) today needs no introduction. Except to point out that the composer himself led its premiere some 113 years ago, conducting the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne. For this recording, the modern-day players comprising the very same ensemble are led by the city’s newly appointed General Music Director, François-Xavier Roth, which patently places this version in a class of its own.

'The arrival of an orchestra like Les Siècles on the harmonia mundi label is entirely logical: ever since it was founded by François-Xavier Roth in 2003, its musicians (mostly belonging to the new generation) have succeeded in placing several centuries of musical creation in perspective by playing the works they tackle on precisely the instruments used at the time of their premiere – without the slightest concession.

The result is quite simple dazzling: never, since it was first heard, has Daphnis et Chloé displayed such a shimmering sound, revealing an infinity of details without ever losing sight of the subtle beauty of the most French of the great ‘Ballets Russes’.‘At this moment in the history of music, Ravel raised the French “Impressionist” orchestral style to a sort of apogee – in a sense it is the last great comédie-ballet in the history of French music’ (François-Xavier Roth).

Each volume in the 'Portraits' series is devoted to a French composer who has now largely been forgotten. With performances by many talented artists, it presents a panorama of his works. The 'Portrait' of Félicien David aims to complement the discography already available with world premiere recordings of the composer's works. Among these are a glimpse of his orchestral output, with the Symphony no. 3 and the Overture to his opéra-comique La Perle du Brésil, the work that really launched David on his operatic career.
