In 2015, the young American singer Cécile McLorin Salvant won a Grammy with her album For One to Love, and this live follow-up from New York’s Village Vanguard, with her classy trio and an occasional string quartet, reworks plenty of standard songs (there are a few shrewd originals too) with audacity, imagination and unerring dramatic timing. Some say Salvant largely avoids jazz models, but the great Betty Carter is a significant influence, even if Salvant and her fine pianist Aaron Diehl arrange the plotlines and payoffs of songs much more meticulously.

Following up her Grammy win, McLorin Salvant release her third album on Mack Avenue Records, called Dreams and Daggers, a double set of discs mainly recorded live with her band over three nights at the Village Vanguard — the venerable Greenwich Village jazz club. A handful of tracks in the collection of 23 were later recorded in studio with a string quartet.

In 1984, three middle-aged women (guitarist Gaye Adegbalola, bassist Earlene Lewis and pianist Ann Rabson) came together to play blues as Saffire. Their 1990 Alligator CD is still Saffire's best all-around recording. Even overlooking the novelty of three women giving a female and middle-aged slant to the blues, this is a highly enjoyable and musical set. Assisted on three numbers by Mark Wenner's harmonica, Saffire plays spirited versions of such tunes as "Middle Aged Blues Boogie," "Even Yuppies Get the Blues," "Fess Up When You Mess Up," "I Almost Lost My Mind" and their theme "Wild Women Don't Have the Blues." Recommended.

Nancy Harrow made a strong impression with her Candid recording Wild Women Don't Have the Blues in 1960, but it was a long time before she was a full-time singer. She had studied classical piano extensively from the age of seven before decided to become a dancer and later a jazz singer. After her Candid recording and an album for Atlantic (1962), Harrow raised a family and spent time outside of music. In 1975, Nancy Harrow came back and recorded frequently for Audiophile, Finesse, Inner City, Tono, Gazell, and Soul Note. She is a talented and swinging bop-based singer who wrote all of the material for her 1993 Lost Lady release.
