By 1972, Campbell's record sales started slipping. After "Manhattan Kansas" reached number six that year, he had trouble having Top 40 hits for the next two years. Furthermore, his television show was canceled. As his career slowed, he began sinking into drug and alcohol addiction, which continued even through his mid-'70s revival. In 1975, he returned to the Top Ten with "Rhinestone Cowboy," a huge hit that reached number one on both the country and pop charts. Over the next two years, he had a number of Top Ten country hits, including "Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.)" and "Don't Pull Your Love"/"Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye," which also reached the pop charts. In 1977, he had his final number one hit with "Southern Nights," which topped both the country and pop charts.

Sammy Cahn wrote lyrics of many of Frank Sinatra's biggest hits, most of which were co-written with Jimmy Van Heusen who deserves a collection of his own. These songs are fabulous and if you enjoy wonderful, relaxing music, this (and all the other "Capitol Sings" collections) is worth your while.

One of the most prolific of Tin Pan Alley scribes, Jerome Kern is given the royal treatment here with 25 vintage interpretations by some of the finest singers in jazz and pop. The likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan may be missing (two stars from songbook competitors Verve), but Capitol more than makes up for it with golden takes from Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, and Judy Garland. Among the many other choice cuts on display, the disc features particularly fine sides by Dinah Washington ("Jim") and Nancy Wilson ("Dearly Beloved").

Great presentations of some of the best known from Rodgers and Hart. Gordon Macrae's version of "My Funny Valentine" is marvelous, and so is Margaret Whiting's "Thou Swell", Peggy Lee's "The Lady Is A Tramp" and Dean Martin's "It's Easy To Remember" to name a few.

This "Capitol Sings" CD surveys works of Irving Berlin, one of the the greatest American songwriters. Standout performances include Kay Starr's "You're Just In Love," Betty Hutton's up-tempo "Blue Skies," and Peggy Lee's "Cheek To Cheek." There are also some lovely Nat King Cole numbers, and a seldom-heard Bobby Darrin swinger "All By Myself".
