Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth is a heart-rendered requiem for Bullens' young daughter who died of cancer in 1996, though it's largely about hope for the living. The singer/songwriter, who debuted in 1979 with Desire Wire, recorded this tribute with the help of a few friends. Bonnie Raitt and Beth Nielsen Chapman sing along on the soulful anthem "Gotta Believe in Something," and Bryan Adams guests on the title track; Lucinda Williams, Benmont Tench, and Rodney Crowell also contribute. Bullens' voice and guitar simply chime with hope throughout the album. She has never sounded better.

Label: Trippin' n' Rhythm | Release Year: 2017

Flugelhorn and trumpet really rock her boat. Cindy Bradley left some imposing traces in the sand of the smooth jazz genre with Just A Little Bit (2007), Bloom (2009), Unscripted (2011) and Bliss (2014). Natural (2017) is her fourth album in connection with the label Trippin' n' Rhythm. The set opens with Girl Talk, a funky exchange of blows between Cindy on trumpet and Paula Atherton on sax. Sax veteran Paula had invited Cindy on her fourth album Ear Candy (2015) and the opening track is according to the principle of mutuality a great thank-you with positive effect.

Rock / Alternative / Indie Rock

Unlike the slew of legendary acts – including My Bloody Valentine, Boards of Canada, and Daft Punk – who surprised fans with new albums in 2013, Pixies emerged from their lengthy recording hiatus more cautiously. By releasing a series of EPs that were eventually collected as Indie Cindy for 2014's Record Store Day, the band eased fans into their new material – and, perhaps, gave them time to lower their expectations. Indie Cindy may be most notable for illustrating the pitfalls genre-defining artists face when attempting a comeback: Pixies had such an impact on how indie rock sounded in their wake that upon their return, it's almost inevitable that they sound like they're aping themselves.
