When it came to classification, Mr. Big always posed a bit of a problem. On the one hand, the band had a big-league virtuoso lead guitarist (Paul Gilbert) who just loved to shred and a hotshot bass player (Billy Sheehan) who regularly topped guitar magazine polls. On the other, all of Mr. Big's hits were sappy (if tuneful) AC-lite through and through, thanks in large part to the mainstream pop sensibilities of lead vocalist Eric Martin…

From the River to the Sea was their first demo, followed by The Infant Hercules, both pretty awful to be honest. A young band's first compositions I guess. So initially, I ignored this album, not expecting anything too much better. Eventually I think I won a CD prize and chose this as I already had every album I wanted. I gave it a few plays but ws not very impressed so I put it away. Months later a few more spins, then Bingo!

2016 album from the acclaimed progressive rock band. Big Big Train return with Folklore, their ¬ first full-length studio album since the award winning English Electric. Folklore contains nine new songs with a total running time of 68 minutes. Despite the album title, Folklore is by no means a collection of traditional-sounding folk music pieces. On Folklore, Big Big Train are reimagining and breathing new life into traditional themes, and also creating a few new ones along the way.

Hot on the heels of the excellent "English Electric, Part 2", Big Big Train has released an interesting boxset. This set includes the masterpiece "English Electric, Part 1", the strong but not quite as good "English Electric, Part 2", and four new songs, "Make Some Noise", "Seen Better Days", "Edgelands", and "The Lovers". The alternate track listing mixed in with the new songs might even draw in some new fans.

Surprise - surprise. I can't figure it out - every time I listen to this album at least a little sounds new to me in some way. Respect! This occurs not often I have to confess. Stylistically Big Big Train don't have turned away from what they have offered before really - however, I'm nailed on here - even when listening for more than ten times now. Wow … it's hard to find the right words for the compositional attempt.

Big Big Train has a lot going for it on this release: beautiful cover art, a theme that we can sink our teeth into (the Battle of Britain) , seven longuish tracks all in the 7-8 minute range, brilliant musicianship featuring excellent guitars from Greg Spawnton, effective rythm section that is upscale from your usual neo lineups, fantastic vocals both male and female and , in closing an overall positive listening experience.

Big Big Train was one of the bands that I enjoy in last years being a moderate fan, I mean I like'em oveall but not got crazy about it. Untill they released The underfall yard 3 years ago and become a well known name in prog world, they had aswell some more then decent albums prior not quite known worl wide. English boy wonders from 1997 is among their most acomplished works, at least for me combining parts who remind me of Genesis but less symphonic with some memorable neo/pop and indie arrangements the result is pritty much ok, even great in places. What I like to this band with a quite long career being formed in late '80 and havinbg almost 10 albums in their sleeves, is that almost every album has something to offer, alternating good to excellent moments, and overall catalogue is quite consistent.

The band has a slightly mellower sound than most in the neo prog genre but well played out. Most of the songs are fronted by Martin Read with Tony Müller backing him up, similar to the way Gabriel / Collins did their melodies. On a few songs they feature female vocalist, Jo Michaels. She has a very pleasant voice… very complimentary to Martin's, showing a more lounge like atmosphere. There is a slight cantebury sound fused with the neo element on "This is Where We Came In".
