On Beyond the Wall, the saxophonist and composer has continued his deep exploration of modal jazz. The album is dedicated to McCoy Tyner, the king and progenitor of modal pianists, and it sounds as if Garrett observed that tutelage well, though the music is unmistakably his own. The core band on the set features drummer Brian Blade, bassist Robert Hurst, and Mulgrew Miller on piano. Pharoah Sanders and Bobby Hutcherson appear on all but two of these nine cuts (Sanders appears on these, the pair on five).
Beyond The Wall Of Sleep is the second all instrumental solo album by guitarist Christian Muenzner (Obscura, Paradox, Spawn Of Possession, Terrestrial Exiled, ex Necrophagist). The line up features the Obscura rhythm section of Hannes Grossmann (drums) and Linus Klausenitzer (bass) as well as keyboard virtuoso Jimmy Pitts. It also features guest guitar solos by Danny Tunker (Aborted) and Terry Syrek. The album was mixed and mastered by Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry). The music contains some of the same ingridients as found on the 2011 debut album Timewarp, but the overall vibe of the album is much darker, fitting the album concept which is based on old horror stories and supernatural themes by H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe and others and which is illustrated in the accompanying 12 page booklet by Anestis Goudas. The influences on the album range from early Shrapnel releases (Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore, Joey Tafolla, Cacophony, Racer X, Greg Howe etc.) and rock fusion to traditional 80's heavy metal to bay area thrash metal and early 90's death metal.
