The 1998 “jazzopen” music festival culminated in an evening for Joachim-Ernst Berendt, the title of whose book Die Welt ist Klang (“The world is sound”) accurately sums up the festival’s programmatic approach and was therefore taken as its motto. In collaboration with this “High Priest of Jazz” – who was 76 at the time and has since died – a program was put together which united some of the most talented musicians, capable of conveying on stage Berendt’s universality of musical understanding.
