Tales Before Narnia: The Roots of Modern Fantasy and Science Fiction

Tales Before Narnia: The Roots of Modern Fantasy and Science Fiction by Douglas A. Anderson
Publisher: Del Rey | Number Of Pages: 352 | Publication Date: 2008-03-25 | ISBN-10: 0345498909 | PDF | 1 Mb

In his acclaimed collection Tales Before Tolkien, Douglas A. Anderson illuminated the sources, inspirations, and influences that fired J.R.R. Tolkien’s genius. Now Anderson turns his attention to Tolkien’s colleague and friend C. S. Lewis, whose influence on modern fantasy, through his beloved Narnia books, is second only to Tolkien’s own.
In many ways, Lewis’s influence has been even wider than Tolkien’s. For in addition to the Narnia series, Lewis wrote groundbreaking works of science fiction, urban fantasy, and religious allegory, and he came to be regarded as among the most important Christian writers of the twentieth century. It will come as no surprise, then, that such a wide-ranging talent drew inspiration from a variety of sources. Here are twenty of the tributaries that fed Lewis’s unique talent, among them:
“The Wood That Time Forgot: The Enchanted Wood,” taken from a never-before-published fantasy by Lewis’s biographer and friend, Roger Lancelyn Green, that directly inspired The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; E. Nesbit’s charming “The Aunt and Amabel,” in which a young girl enters another world by means of a wardrobe; “The Snow Queen,” by Hans Christian Andersen, featuring the abduction of a young boy by a woman as cruel as she is beautiful; and many more, including works by Charles Dickens, Kenneth Grahame, G. K. Chesterton, and George MacDonald, of whom Lewis would write, “I have never concealed the fact that I regarded him as my master.”

The Cross of Christ

The Cross of Christ by Dr. John R.W. Stott
English | Feb. 6, 1988 | ISBN: 0877849986 | 196 Pages | PDF | 46 MB

The work of a lifetime, from one of the world's most influential thinkers, about the heart of the Christian faith. "I could never myself believe in God, if it were not for the cross. . . . In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it?" With compelling honesty John Stott confronts this generation with the centrality of the cross in God's redemption of the world—a world now haunted by the memories of Auschwitz, the pain of oppression and the specter of nuclear war. Can we see triumph in tragedy, victory in shame? Why should an object of Roman distaste and Jewish disgust be the emblem of our worship and the axiom of our faith? And what does it mean for us today?

Joe Driscoll has gained fame over the last decade for his unique blend of folk, funk and hip-hop. Sekou Kouyate, from Guinea, is one of the most innovative and virtuosic players of the kora, the 21-stringed West African harp. When these two seemingly disparate artistic forces are combined, an incendiary musical reaction takes place. They first first met in 2010 at a festival in Marseille, France and their explosive combustibility was evident in their jaw-dropping live shows and energizing debut album, Faya, which was released by Cumbancha Discovery in 2014. Performing as a quartet, backed by drums and bass, Joe & Sekou have performed at hundreds of festivals and venues across Europe, North America and Africa, earning ecstatic reviews whenever they set foot on stage.

Working on the repertoire Ace owns is an often daunting, but never less than rewarding, task. Whether it be drawn from Combo, Modern, Cash/Money/RIH or whatever, it's always a pleasure to get stuck into the assembly of another great package of 40s/50s R&B and, as maybe Ace's most currently-active A&R guy in this area (with respect to my equally-enthusiastic colleagues Broven, J., and Gibbon, P.), it's fair to say that I get more pleasure out of doing so than most! Since I first came to Ace in September 2001, barely a week has gone by when I have not been working on some kind of vintage R&B package, and I hope that continues to be the case for a long time to come!

The Loves of Mme. DuBarry was the American title of the 1935 British operetta I Give My Heart, based on the stage musical The DuBarry. German actress Gitta Alpar stars as Jeanne, the young 18th century Parisian milliner who sleeps her way to the uppermost rungs of French aristocracy, emerging at last as the glamorous Madame DuBarry, mistress of Louis XV (Owen Nares). Refusing to gloss over DuBarry's sexual peccadilloes (as previous films with Norma Talmadge and Dolores del Rio had done), the film presents the "heroine" as a whore, pure and simple-or, on second thought, not so pure and simple! Particularly troublesome for American censors was a scene in which DuBarry is depicted as a resident of a bawdy house. Otherwise, The Loves of Madame DuBarry is standard historical-drama fare, allowing dozens of top European actors to play "dress-up" for 90 minutes.

20th May, 2016, marks forty years since David Bowie's first ever best of compilation, CHANGESONEBOWIE (with tracks from the period 1969 to 1976), was released. The album stayed in the Top 10 for eleven weeks, peaking at #2. Outstanding reissue. It sounds better than the original release. The standout track is "John I'm only dancing". I have never heard the sax and guitar as clearly on this mix. What a difference ! Get this one you will not be disappointed. The original David Bowie hits compilation tells the story of Bowie's metamorphosis from quizzical folkie to a conquering colossus, and is partially responsible for cementing his stardom.
