Chet Baker (trumpet) was arguably at the peak of his prowess when captured in a quartet setting at the Masonic Temple in Ann Arbor, MI, May 9, 1954. He's joined by Russ Freeman (piano), Carson Smith (bass) and Bob Neel (drums), all of whom provide ample assistance without ever obscuring their leader's laid-back and refined style. Baker's sublime sounds also garnered notice from critics, who had placed him atop polls in both Metronome and Down Beat magazines the previous year.

When this CD was initially released, it had quite a few jazz collectors scratching their heads wondering why they had never heard of it. Previously unissued, these formerly unknown performances (just four songs with eight alternate takes) feature the vocals of Earl Coleman and Ann Baker in 1946 but the backup group is of great interest for it includes trumpeter Miles Davis and tenor-saxophonist Gene Ammons. It's not essential music but bop collectors will still want to pick it up.

The third-and-final album from the Baker Gurvitz Army doesn't quite live up to the high standards reached on the outfit's previous efforts, but it's still an enjoyable work…

The Dutch guitarist was part of a mini dutch invasion of the early 1970's (along with Tee Set and Shocking Blue) and hit with "Little Brown Bag", but it wasn't until 1975 that he hit big with "Una Paloma Blanca", adopted by the disco set before disco went mainstream. This disc compiles his best material on a single volume.

The Most Important Jazz Album of 1964/65 was the first album trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker recorded upon returning to the United States in 1964. Jazz had undergone a radical development post-1963 with artists such as John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter beginning to focus on complex harmonic explorations over pretty melody. Having spent the prior three years in Europe, falling deeper into heroin addiction, Baker found himself a pleasant, if somewhat forgotten, anachronism of the previous decade. Consequently, the icon of '50s cool attempted to reinvigorate his career and showcase his musical growth by enlisting the sensitive piano chops of Hal Galper and old collaborator tenor saxophonist Phil Urso. The new sideman, combined with a heavy dose of Tadd Dameron's compositions, gave Baker a more muscular edge that rubbed nicely with his trademark lyricism updating his sound for the hard bop '60s – a decade that would end, however, with Baker losing his teeth and falling into obscurity.
