The Vintage Recording Project was set up to replicate recording techniques used in the late 1920sand 1930s. Over six CDs the project has developed into looking at repertoire. In the early days of Jazz there were rumours of collaborations which have some basis in fact, but which have passed into folklore. One such collaboration was a jam session held following a meeting of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke.

Coming off his Grammy-nominated 2013 album, The World According to Andy Bey, vocalist/pianist Andy Bey delivers the equally compelling 2014 release Pages from an Imaginary Life. As with its predecessor, Pages finds the jazz iconoclast returning to his roots with a set of American Popular Song standards done in a ruminative, stripped-down style. This is Bey, alone at the piano, delving deeply into the harmony, melody, and lyrics of each song. But don't let the spare setting fool you. Bey is a master of interpretation. In his seventies at the time of recording, and having performed over the years in a variety of settings from leading his own swinging vocal trio, to working with hard bop pioneer Horace Silver, to exploring the avant-garde with Archie Shepp, Bey has aged into a jazz oracle who doesn't so much perform songs as conjure them from somewhere in the mystical ether of his psyche.

For decades, if you wanted to listen to great music all you needed to do was stare at a screen! TV and film soundtracks were often the work of US legends such as Lalo Schiffrin, Oliver Nelson & Quincy Jones, and their Uk counterparts Ronnie Hazelhurst and Alan Hawkshaw, provided the soundtrack to the 60's & 70's at a time when film and TV music was unashamedly funky and featured the ensemble of choice for the jazz arranger.. the big band.

With a brilliant mix of writing and improvisation, a relevant and generous music, rich compositions where each personality is highlighted while offering a group sound, such is Andy Emler ‘s musical composition. Years of friendships through multiple projects have resulted in a rare and exemplary complicity between these 4 virtuosos who offer us a most stimulating collective performance. Andy Emler wished he could work again with Marc Ducret more regularly. As a reminder: a record in quintet made with Marc in the early 80s… More recently Andy has invited Marc to join the MegaOctet, particularly in London and at the Europa Jazz Festival. In spite of their different musical paths both artists share close links. In addition, the Emler, Tchamitchian, Echampard trio (with their 13 years of existence and 3 CDs) is a formation that extends its influence and its rich singularity throughout Europe. The music, like a slowly ripening fruit, is marked by Andy’s formal requirement and respect for the three musicians who surround him.

Reunion is the 2nd collaborative album by Matt Otto (tenor) and Andy Ehling (alto). The saxophonists went to Irvine High and Berklee together in the 80's and played in Japan in the 90's. This is a great Album of original music reflecting their friendship. Andy Ehling, who spearheaded the project, flew from the Bay Area to Kansas City in the summer of 2015. After rehearsing and performing the music live, the band went into the studio for two days to record the material. Leonard Thompson flew in from NYC for the project while Brad, Matt and Ben are all local to the Kansas City area. The music is a nice reflection of both Matt and Andy's compositions and improvisation. The two have played together for over 30 years and there is a certain musical chemistry in their collaboration.

Adamson's quintet features his original compositions; everything they perform is drawn from Adamson's vast catalogue of original work that teems with exiting polyrhythms and richly contrasted harmonies. The band has a virile and muscular sound, while the leader's full fisted chords charging ahead with Taylor riding on his back on pieces like the snappy "Twilight in the Making" and the loping "First Light." Bennett's searing alto is soulful on the latter, while on tenor he howls like late period Coltrane on the ferocious "High Street Roundabout." Andes' work on electric bass gives reflections of Jaco Pastorius as he gets funky with Adamson's keyboard on the bicep flexing "Dived We Stand." Huff's trumpet is bright and clear on the Blue Note-inspired "Sunny Side Up" while the rhythm team shows its more mellow side as the leader floats mellow chords on "Once Through the Changes." Fans of post modern hard bop will have a field day with this easy pleaser.
