Magazines or Novels features the new single Back Home, a joyously anthemic track that illustrates Grammer s knack for writing infectious, relatable songs and the strength of his soaring voice. It also showcases the musician s growth since his last full-length release. On the new album, Grammer reinforces his place among elite male pop artists through honest reflections of the impressive ride he s been on during the past couple of years.

It's hard enough to find a contemporary blues record with a decent vocalist, so it is quite special to encounter one with two. As the title boldly states, Double Strike by the Andy T Band, features a pair of veteran blues singers, Nick Nixon and Alabama Mike (Michael A. Benjamin), though the circumstances surrounding the production is bittersweet.

Best known to most people for his early work as a Portishead collaborator and International tour DJ, Andy Smith earned his ‘Legendary’ title among crate diggers in 1998 when he released seminal mix album ‘The Document’. In the years since, Andy has continued to live up to his reputation as one of the finest and most creative DJs on the planet, tirelessly digging in the crates and emerging with pure gold. Following in the footsteps of his 2006 exploration of Trojan’s mighty reggae vaults and his two compilations exploring funk music from New Orleans and Jamaica, Andy turns his attention to disco and boogie for the very first time.

Andy LaVerne continues to explore the path he set out with his previous critically acclaimed release 'Genesis', this time with an added voice in trumpet/flugelhorn by Alex Sipiagin as well as Mike Richmond's overdubbed cello over his bass-line. As in the previous album all titles are new originals by LaVerne, who, to quote Neil Tesser, Grammy Award winning American journalist, is a committed melodist, with truly individualistic tone. "…Intelligent Design lives up to its name as one of LaVerne's best efforts thus far and one of the finest jazz releases of the year.".

If you can judge someone by the company he keeps, then Andy Laster is top-notch all the way. This quartet is entirely different than his Hydra quintet, yet the quality of the group is just as impressive. Here, he drops the electric guitar and substitutes Erik Friedlander on cello for Drew Gress' bass. The higher-pitched stringed instrument is totally effective, especially in the hands of Friedlander. Cuong Vu plays trumpet, and he is excellent, although it is hard to measure up to Herb Robertson. Kenny Wollesen rounds out the group on percussion, where his sensitive playing fits nicely. Like its predecessor, this recording relies greatly on Laster's awesome compositional skills, which exceed the quality of his own fine improvisations. The disappointingly short recording time (less than 45 minutes) is a shame, considering the eminently accessible layered textures and excellent solos.

Horace Andy, an enormously popular reggae singer in the 1970s, enjoyed a resurgence of popularity in the late '90s, due in part to his extensive work with the British band Massive Attack. This has led, thankfully, to massive reissues of his earlier work, of which this is one of the better examples. Each of the ten tracks is presented in "discomix" style: The normal, vocal version comes first, and then segues seamlessly into the dub version.
