Janie Fricke was one of the most popular female country singers of the '80s, racking up an enviable string of hits and proving herself a versatile vocalist with a particular flair for ballads. Fricke was born in South Whitney, IN, in 1952 and learned piano and guitar as a child; her first vocal influences were folkies like Joan Baez and Judy Collins, but she fell in love with country music as well. During college, she sang commercial jingles for a Memphis radio station and moved to Nashville in 1975, where she quickly became an in-demand session vocalist. She got her first major exposure in 1976, when producer Billy Sherrill teamed her with Johnny Duncan for a set of duets that included "Joe and the Cowboy," "Stranger," and "Thinkin' of a Rendezvous," the latter of which went to number one on the country charts.

This opera, Handel's penultimate, is relatively direct, both in its scoring–just strings and oboes–and its plot: Rosmene (soprano) must choose between Tirinto (mezzo-soprano), whom she loves and who loves her, and Imeneo (bass-baritone), who rescued her from pirates. Rosmene's confidante Clomiri (soprano) loves Imeneo, but it is unrequited; he loves Rosmene. Argenio (bass) is Rosmene's father; he wants her to marry Imeneo. This simplicity might lead you to believe that the opera is lightweight or emotionally void (it was referred to as an "operetta" at its premiere), but it's remarkable how involved the listener gets in the plot. Until the very last moment we don't know who Rosmene will select, and furthermore, when she feigns madness because she must choose between duty and love, she either feigns it so well that we believe her too, or like Hamlet, she actually is mad–at least for a little while. She opts for duty and picks Imeneo, explaining in a brief final aria that she's like a boat at the mercy of the wind that has gone from one shore to another: "Dear deserted shore," she sings to Tirinto, "if fate took it elsewhere, how did the unfortunate boat commit a sin?"

This album comprises music inspired by the great Ahmad Jamal and his elegant arrangements of popular jazz standards. From 1958-1961 Jamal played with bassist Israel Corsby and drummer Vernel Fournier. This legendary trio was described as playing bright and light swing music with phrasing and harmony from the bebop area and at the same time clear parallel to classical music. Bassist Andreas Dreier has once again brought his trio together. After amazing critics from the first CD «Poinciana» (2014) Andreas Dreier Trio is now ready with the follow-up. Once again the music is arrangements from Jamals piano trio translated into guitar trio. With one of Norways leading jazz guitarists Bjørn Vidar Solli and the Australian drummer Adam Pache, this trio presents exclusive and elegant swing music influenced by one of jazz history’s greatest piano trios.

'One glance at Schubert's trio, and the miserable hustle and bustle of human existence vanishes, the world takes on fresh lustre', wrote Robert Schumann in 1836 of Schubert's Piano Trio D898. He was equally admiring of the Viennese composer's other great trio, D929, notably its funeral march-like Andante con moto, later to achieve cinematic fame in Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon'.

German poet and musician Oswald von Wolkenstein (circa 1377-1445) made sure his legacy was secure by having his works compiled into collections during his lifetime. While he was certainly the author of the texts, it is less clear how many of the pieces, which number over 130, include his original music, and how many had his texts applied to preexisting works. In any case, it's an intriguing and attractive body of work, and this collection of 18 of his pieces, plus three other works, makes a fine introduction to his legacy.

She is blond, weighs only .012 ounces, and dresses in maple, spruce, a little steel and some varnish. When we met she whispered „Let’s find a double bass player, and a huge shining black grand piano with a Tickleman.“ Her voice rolled over me like a cloud. She talked non-stop while I stroked her strings with my black plastic plate. „Take me to a studio in a big faraway city! We’ll make music for the whole world they’ll hear you sing, scat, troll, whistle!“ And so we did. And the music which I have loved these 40 years now plays on this silver disc.
