Who is akin to whom? Are they spiritual or elective kinships? In the first instance, all the pieces recorded here are akin to each other in that they are especially suitable for that most sensitive of all keyboard instruments, the clavichord. Beauty is another common feature, which they each display in their own way. And in the circle of fifths these pieces are very close to one another.

I’ve been singing with French pianist Stephan Oliva since 2000, doing a few concerts per year, mostly playing duo. These concerts have always been special to me, they felt like fleeting night music. We were never in any rush to record, enjoying very much the intense and elusive moments concerts are. In 2006, I was invited to record two tracks on Stephan’s album “Miroirs” (his other duo partners on this record including Joey Baron, Linda Sharrock, Jean-Marc Foltz). And last year, he invited me to be part of an entire record, together with Norwegian drummer and percussionist Øyvind Hegg-Lunde. We really love Jimmy Giuffre and Don Cherry: Their playing, but also very much their compositions. For a singer, to be invited into a collective, where the voice is a very equal part of the group, is a privilege. It allows me to develop different shades of musicianship, and I truly enjoy it.

Hailed by NPR as "one of the most talked-about names in contemporary jazz," trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire has proven himself an artist of rare ability and wide-ranging aesthetic interests on his previous Blue Note releases. With his expansive double album A Rift in Decorum: Live At The Village Vanguard, Akinmusire reaches a new pinnacle with his longtime pianist Sam Harris, bassist Harish Raghavan and drummer Justin Brown: they join a distinguished strata of jazz artists who’ve made live recordings at the hallowed New York City venue.

Stephan Micus is an extraordinary musician who collects instruments from around the world, learns to play them and composes his own music for them. He rarely plays them in their traditional manner and often adapts and extends the instruments. The point is not to recreate traditional sounds, but create something new. He often combines instruments that would never normally be heard together and frequently multitracks them. He plays nine different instruments on Inland Sea, although the nyckelharpa, a keyed fiddle from Sweden is the focus in a way that's quite unusual for Micus. Inland Sea is his 22nd album for ECM. Micus says that Inland Sea refers both to a geographical landscape, but is also "something we have inside ourselves".

Inland Sea is Stephan Micus' 22nd solo album for ECM, each one taking his audience on musical journeys to far-flung places and unique sound worlds. For decades, he has been travelling, collecting and studying musical instruments from all over the world and creating new music for them. Micus often combines instruments from different cultures and continents that would never normally be played together, adapting and extending them, and rarely playing them in a traditional manner. The instruments then become a cast of characters that help tell the particular story of that album. While he plays nine different instruments on Inland Sea, the lead role belongs to the nyckelharpa - a keyed fiddle from Sweden, with an array of other instruments and vocals providing layers and textures throughout.

Desert Poems both consolidates and expands Stephan Micus's solo quest to fashion a music of archetypal, world-ranging import: music–often modal in nature–which would be both as old as the proverbial hills, yet as fresh as tomorrow. If you've followed this multi-instrumentalist's musical odyssey of the past 30-or-so years (this is something like his 15th solo project) you probably won't need any encouragement to buy an album that finds Micus's mastery of such instruments as the sarangi, nay, shakahuchi, steel drum and humble flower pot enhanced by a range of solo and polyphonic vocals. His pan-global sources are filtered to create a somewhat sombre, strongly devotional sense of the deeper rhythms of life to which music may awaken us. Apart from the vocalising on pieces like "Contessa Entellina", standout tracks include the solo shakuhachi feature "First Snow" and an instrumental reworking of "Shen Khar Venakhi", a masterpiece of old Georgian polyphony.
