When preparing assets to go into a game engine, many different types of texture maps are typically required.
This Maya tutorial will break down 3 major types of maps used in game pipelines and teach you efficient and effective ways to bake each right inside of Maya. We’ll begin by learning how to prepare geometry for the baking process by blowing it up or exploding it.

When working on 3D projects, games more specifically, using efficient assets is very important. There are limitations that make using very dense, highly detailed models impractical. They can be difficult to maneuver around a scene and the topology may not be ideal for deformation.

Creating virtual product shots reduces the need for photography. But those shots need to be accurately shaded, lighted, and rendered to seem realistic. That's when you turn to Maya. Its toolset for materials and lighting is almost limitless. In this course, you'll learn to shade, light, and render a product shot in Maya.

Light has more qualities than you think: temperature, brightness, and diffusion, just to name three. When it comes to replicating it in the digital world, you need strong materials and lighting tools, and Maya offers both.

In this tutorial, we'll learn how to create a 3D illustration for use on a magazine cover. Over the tutorial we will learn how to efficiently model by only modeling what we need and how to reuse basic base meshes as starting points. Then we will look at how to efficiently UV map, looking at techniques to quickly produce distortion free UVs. Then using Ambient Occlusion bakes as starting points for our textures we will look at a efficient and repeatable texturing process. We will then look at how to pose our characters, setup shaders to replicate advanced effects such as refraction and sub-surface scattering, before setting up render passes and layers for compositing. Finally we will bring it all together in Photoshop using our layers to composite and adjust our image before looking at some final techniques to complete our 3D Illustration.
