Comparative Studies in Word Order Variation: Adverbs, Pronouns, and Clause Structure in Romance and Germanic

Comparative Studies in Word Order Variation: Adverbs, Pronouns, and Clause Structure in Romance and Germanic
Publisher: John Benjamins Pub | 1998 | ISBN: 9027227411/155619904X | English | True PDF | 381 pages | 14.37 Mb

Addresses the question of word order variation in Romance languages - especially French - and in Germanic languages - especially German. The theoretical framework adopted is the "Principles & Parameters Theory of Transformational Generative Grammar". The empirical contribution of this book is to treat three linguistically distinct phenomena - adverbs, pronouns and clause structure - in two typologically distinct classes of languages. The two main theoretical concepts explored are: a model of Checking Theory containing principles and parameters; and a new conception of phrase structure within X-Theory.

It covers applications in several areas including transportations and security risk assessments, as well as applications related to current topics in safety and risk. Safety and Risk Modeling is a valuable resource for understanding the latest developments in both qualitative and quantitative methods of safety and risk analysis and their applications in operating environments.
Phrase Structure and Grammatical Relations in Tagalog (Center for the Study of Language and Information - Lecture Notes)

Over the last twenty years or so, most of the work on the syntax of Philippine languages has been focused on the question of whether or not these languages can be said to have grammatical subjects, and if so which argument of a basic transitive clause should be analysed as being the subject. Paul Kroeger's contribution to this debate asserts that grammatical relations such as subject and object are syntactic notions, and must be identified on the basis of syntactic properties, rather than by semantic roles or discourse functions. A large number of syntactic processes in Tagalog uniquely select the argument which bears the nominative case. On the other hand, the data which have been used in the debate to assert the ambiguity of subjecthood are best analysed in terms of semantic rather than syntactic constraints. Together these facts support an analysis that takes the nominative argument as the subject. Kroeger examines the history of the subjecthood debate and uses data from Tagalog to test the theories that have been put forth. His conclusions entail consequences for certain linguistic concepts and theories, and lead Kroeger to assert that grammatical relations are not defined in terms of surface phrase structure configurations, contrary to the assumptions of many approaches to syntax including the Government-Binding theory. Paul Kroeger is presently doing fieldwork in Austronesian languages and teaching linguistics to fieldworkers from around the world.

Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry relates recent developments and new exciting approaches in supramolecular chemistry. The series covers al areas from theoretical and modelling espects through organic and inorganic chemistry and biochemistry to materials, solid-state and polymer sciences reflecting the many and varied applications of supramolecular structures in modern chemistry. Crystal engineering is one of the fastest growing areas in supramolecular chemistry because it is able to define design strategies that link structure with properties of useful solids. Crystal Design is the first book that emphasises this continuity between what a crystal is and what a crystal can do. Written by experts, this book establishes connections between the structures of molecular materials and their properties and links the domains of intermolecular interactions, crystal structures and crystal properties.
