Xan is one half of The Omega Syndicate so as you would expect this album is sequencer dominated but the tracks are shorter and more structured. We begin with the ominously titled 'Dark Angel'. A sequence rises and falls in pitch through the mix. A second one joins it, as does a powerful bass rhythm. This is very exciting stuff which got my whole body moving within seconds of the track's start. A lead line flashes over the top then even more rhythm is introduced as things reach fever pitch. Additional sequences come and go. It is amazing how much is packed into under ten minutes. A superb opener. 'Psy-Gamma' is straight into a rather Jarre-ish groove with delicate leads hinting at Vangelis hitting the spot beautifully. Another sequence is added and things take a somewhat meaner turn.

Ever since he first began to be noticed in 1992, Eric Alexander has developed into one of the giants of the tenor sax. He is not an avant-garde trailblazer; nor are there scores of saxophonists who sound like his clones…

Since arriving on the jazz scene, Eric Alexander has turned into one of the busiest tenor saxophonists, recording prolifically for labels in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, in addition to his participation in the all-star band One for All. This third volume of ballads for Venus utilizes the same rhythm section as the earlier two editions: pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth, three of the busiest jazz musicians in New York City…

No one except psychedelic Renaissance man Alexander "Skip" Spence could have created an album such as Oar. Alternately heralded as a "soundtrack to schizophrenia" and a "visionary solo effort," Oar became delegated to cut out and bargain bins shortly after its release in the spring of 1969. However those who did hear it were instantly drawn into Spence's inimitable sonic surrealism. As his illustrious past in the Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Moby Grape would suggest, this album is a pastiche of folk and rock. In reality, however, while these original compositions may draw from those genres, each song has the individuality of a fingerprint. As a solo recording, Oar is paramount as Spence performed and produced every sound on the album himself at Columbia Records studios in Nashville in the space of less than two weeks.

The legendary Four Brothers reed section of Woody Herman's famous "Second Herd" big band of 1947, (Herbie Steward, Zoot Sims, Stan Getz and Serge Chaloff) is reimagined and reinvigorated by jazz icons Harry Allen, Eric Alexander, Grant Stewart and Gary Smulyan on the exciting, swinging and audacious recording of The Candy Men by Harry Allen's All Star New York Saxophone Band. Offering a sensational set of twelve bop-infused tunes containing some hard-driving, mid-tempo swing pieces to breathy and bossa-styled ballads, one sampling of this disc is just not enough. The material and the musicianship is so outstanding, that the late, great bandleader Woody Herman himself, would be proud of the way this group of jazz icons, has so elegantly represented the original Brothers section.

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. A nice little set from Monty Alexander – a Sunday Night session recorded with the same group, on the same weekend as his Saturday Night album! Monty Alexander's always great in a trio, but we really love the pianist when he's trying to add a little something extra to the mix – as he does here in a quartet performance that features some nice added percussion from Robert Thomas! The tracks have that warm glow and open flow that Alexander first started bringing to his music in the 70s – with sensitive rhythm work here from Reggie Johnson on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums – but the added percussion really helps things swing at a slightly higher level, giving a gentle kick to some cuts, while Monty's still able to open up with some warmly lyrical lines over the top.

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. A great little date from pianist Monty Alexander – a set that's maybe got a bit more bite than some of Monty's American records from the time – even though this overseas release was still recorded in Florida! The core trio also features added percussion – which provides a stronger rhythmic impulse than usual, and which has the group really stretching out on some longer tunes – especially the album's version of "Since My Baby Left Me", which features guest cornet from Nat Adderley! The group on the rest of the record features Alexander on piano, Reggie Johnson on bass, Ed Thigpen on drums, and Robert Thomas Jr. on percussion.
