Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach had begun his series für Kenner und Liebhaber – ‘for Connaisseurs and Amateurs’ – with the traditional formula of a set of six sonatas, but became more unconventional in the second and third collection in which he alternated three sonatas with three rondos. With the fourth instalment, published in 1783, he went further still as he increased the number of pieces to seven and added ‘free fantasias’ to the sonatas and rondos.

The unjustly neglected piano quartet (J76) was completed in September of the year 1809, which the 22-year-old Weber spent in Stuttgart. It was originally offered to the publisher Hans Georg Nägeli, but he rejected it, advising the composer that it created wanton ‘confusion in the arrangement of its ideas’ and indeed too obviously imitated the ‘bizarreries’ of Beethoven.

Camerata RCO performs the classical Bach Goldberg Variations which are arranged by Soviet-Russian born orchestrator-arranger Dmitry Sitkovetsky. The Bach Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, is a work written for harpsichord by Johann Sebastian Bach, consisting of an aria and a set of 30 variations, after which the aria is repeated. These important examples of the variations are named after Johan Gottlieb Goldberg, who may have been the first performer of the published work in 1741. The performers consisting of Annebeth Webb (violin), Jeroen Woudstra (viola) and Honorine Schaeffer (violoncello) are members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

'The meditation, sobriety and modesty of Bach's music are profoundly moving. In this era when so much importance is granted to appearances, his music remains, pushes us to introspection and raises existential questions that, despite the passage of centuries, remain topical. 'I have chosen works transcribed by Busoni, Siloti or Kempff, and not that of works written for harpsichord, for their transcriptions hold out a thread between Bach's era and our modern world.
