It’s amazing to think that world première recordings of Bach are possible today at all. The harpsichordist Alexander Grychtolik has painstakingly reconstructed two homage cantatas from Bach’s Leipzig years. The first, Erwählte Pleissenstadt (BWV 216a), survives only in a draft libretto and a few fragments of notation rediscovered in 2003 among the posthumous papers of a Japanese pianist. The second, O angenehme Melodei (BWV 210a), survives only in a soprano part and a separate print of the libretto for the earliest of its three versions.

Equally adept with both the cello and organ, Alexander Knyazev, a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory specializing in cello and Nizhny Novgorod Conservatory specializing in organ has long focused on the organ and cello repertory of J.S. Bach. Lauded for his innate musicality and interpretative skills, Knyazevs first public acclaim came as a cellist. This collection presents the rarely performed chorale preludes composed by Bach during his stay in Leipzig in the last decade of his life and not published until after his death. Recorded in 2012 in the Riga Cathedral in Latvia renowned for its historic pipe organ.

Besides the fact that they both celebrate Augustus III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, there is a close connection between the two works included on the eighth volume of Bach’s secular cantatas. On 2nd October 1734, the King and his family made a surprise visit to Leipzig, and in all haste a festive event was planned for three days later, in celebration of the anniversary of Augustus’s ascension to the Polish throne. Bach was asked to provide the musical entertainment, and consequently had to put aside the work he was busy composing… namely BWV 206 Schleicht, spielende Wellen, intended for a celebration of the King’s birthday on 7th October!
