It’s amazing to think that world première recordings of Bach are possible today at all. The harpsichordist Alexander Grychtolik has painstakingly reconstructed two homage cantatas from Bach’s Leipzig years. The first, Erwählte Pleissenstadt (BWV 216a), survives only in a draft libretto and a few fragments of notation rediscovered in 2003 among the posthumous papers of a Japanese pianist. The second, O angenehme Melodei (BWV 210a), survives only in a soprano part and a separate print of the libretto for the earliest of its three versions.

This album features one of the gems performed by Korneyev, a peak of baroque flute – six sonatas for flute and harpsichord, and the partita for solo flute by J.S. Bach.

Director and violinist Alexander Janiczek leads principal players from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in this beautifully intimate recording. Mozart's writing allows each player to shine and demonstrates the depth of talent within the ensemble, illustrating why this orchestra has had such extensive success with its previous Mozart recordings. The works on this disc are full of well-known tunes which demonstrate Mozart's trademark melodic beauty. Acclaimed oboist, Robin Williams, gives a dazzling performance of the composer's great masterpiece. This is the fourteenth recording in the orchestra's hugely successful partnership with Linn Records, a series that includes the award-winning Mozart Symphonies recordings with the late Sir Charles Mackerras.

Hilary Hahn is certainly one of the best young violinists before the public. Now 23 years old, she has abundantly fulfilled her early promise as a radiantly talented as well as singularly earnest prodigy, and grown into a brilliant violinist and a communicative, arresting performer. On this recording, which features Bach's Violin Concertos in A minor, BWV 1041 and E major, BWV 1042, as well as the Concerto for two violins in D minor, BWV 1043 and the Concerto for violin and oboe in C minor, BWV 1060, her flawless technique and strikingly beautiful, intensely focussed tone are on full display.

CBS/Sony Classical has been accompanying superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma for decades on his journey through the unsurpassed works written for his instrument by Johann Sebastian Bach. The label is now pleased to announce the release of important landmarks from that journey, Yo-Yo Ma Plays Bach, on a single CD. Ma's first recording of Bach's six Solo Suites, which went on to win the Grammy® for "Best Classical Instrumental Performance" and is represented here by the Sarabande from the Sixth Suite, took place in 1982. In the same year, Yo-Yo Ma recorded Bach's complete sonatas for viola da gamba with harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper which was hailed by Gramophone as "intelligent and expressive."

Sebastian Knauer’s new album is a reminder of the great Bach musical family. The Bach & Sons 2 project traces the family tree via works by father Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian. The pianist is constantly on the lookout for unusual repertoire. “I am constantly on the look-out for repertoire that is still little known. And so I wanted to take the much-recorded original Bach and add something that is not so common, and at the same time is worth listening to.”

Akiko Suwanai (born in 1972) is one of the brightest violinists to have emerged in the late 20th century, winning the Tchaikovsky International Competition, the youngest person to do so, in 1990. She has gone on to an impressive concert and recording career that encompasses both traditional repertoire and world premieres. Her 2006 album J.S. Bach: Violin Concertos was an instant success. Her performance is impressive: incisive, nuanced, and idiomatic. Her tone has an appealing warmth, but she remains true to the character of the music and doesn't lapse into Romantic tone quality or interpretations.

Johann Sebastian Bach has long been a guiding star for the bassoonist Burak Ozdemir. In his native Istanbul he regularly sang as a boy chorister in Bach’s choral works, and as a member of Early Music ensembles he later played the bassoon in all the composer’s great sacred vocal works, from the Passions to the Christmas oratorio.

For biographer Philipp Spitta, Bach's period as organist and later Konzertmeister to the Duke of Weimar (1708-17) was the time of his ‘early mastery’. Nowhere is this more evident than in the small but highly distinguished body of cantatas he wrote there, whether for the court chapel – the Himmelsburg or ‘Castle of Heaven’ – or for some clearly very joyful wedding (BWV202). From the ravishing duets for soprano and oboe of the latter to the penitential strains of BWV199, the radiant voice of Carolyn Sampson and the virtuosos of the Freiburger Barockorchester do full justice to Bach's inventiveness.

Johann Bernhard Bach (1676-1749) is a somewhat ill-known member of the family, but known by his first cousin once removed, Johann Sebastian. A disciple of Pachelbel, he was in the service of the court of Eisenach and left us only instrumental music. His four Ouvertures for orchestra constitute the obvious link between French music of the Grand Siècle and the compositions that Johann Sebastian would write in Weimar and Cöthen. A missing link to be (re) discovered.
