Each of the three symphonies on this recording represents a significant milestone in Havergal Brians long musical journey, and each demonstrates the breadth of his symphonic approach. No. 8 was the first of Brians symphonies to be performed and is one of his most gripping and unpredictable, full of sonic invention. Behind the more apparently genial and expansive No. 21 lies profound emotional complexity, while No. 26 embodies elements of a divertimento though it retains disquieting outbursts. Gramophone wrote of the previous Brian recording by these forces (8.573408): The New Russia State Symphony Orchestra do the music proud. This release completes the commercial recording of all 32 of Brians symphonies on Naxos and Marco Polo.

The late Thelonious Monk is most certainly the toast of the town these days. With the High Priest of Bop's centennial upon us, he's being saluted from all corners of the jazz world. Pianist John Beasley is leading the charge on the big band front with his MONK'estra, trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith is reflecting on the great pianist-composer all by his lonesome, and New York's Jazz Standard has given over Monk's birth month to a broad swath of tributes to mark this grand occasion. So is it any wonder that the positively precocious Joey Alexander would want to get in on the action?

A native of the Kursk province of a former Great Empire, a de scendant of an ancient Russian noble family, Nikolai Borisovich Obouhov (1892 — 1954) left an immense artistic legacy for his successors. His vivid life permeated with legends, his innovation and doubtless mark of outstanding individuality has aroused a great deal of interest in the present day. It is known that among his ardent admirers were Maurice Ravel, Olivier Messiaen, Arthur Honneger, Ivan Wyschnegradsky and Edison Denisov.

This has the look of a career-making recording from Scots violinist Nicola Benedetti, putting her up against difficult repertory that diverges from the crowd-pleasing fare that formed the basis of her career up to this album. It would have been hard to predict just how well she pulls off her task here; few could have heard the profound interpreter of Russian music in the Italia and Silver Violin collections from earlier in the 2010s. The Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 99, is an emotionally thorny work in five movements anchored by a tense passacaglia in the middle. The composer withheld it from publication during the period of renewed Stalinist repression in the late 1940s. It was premiered in 1955 by David Oistrakh, and in endurance and elevated tone even if not quite in lyrical grandeur, Benedetti brings that master to mind. Sample the Stravinskian "Burlesque" finale for a sense of how Benedetti gets outside herself here. The Glazunov Violin Concerto, Op. 82, is a more stable work, rooted in pre-WWI conservatory traditions, and Benedetti's reading is nothing short of letter-perfect.

Tatjana Ruhland has been described as the Paganini of the flute, and since her debut at New Yorks Carnegie Hall she has been revered as one of todays most prominent flautists. In this release she dedicates herself to Carl Reineckes chamber and concertante flute compositions, all of which he composed during the second half of his life. Along with the Undine Sonata op. 167 for flute and piano, today his most frequently performed work, the recording features the two concertante works written by him when he was over eighty years old. Here the initial dominance of stylistic elements associated with Mendelssohn has yielded to a tonal language that is both electrifying and highly individual. Reineckes music is diatonic in design but so strongly pervaded by semitones and suspensions that it also continues to flow.
