Three long tracks of lyrical lite progressive jazz rock with plenty of flute, guitar, and sax solos - always pleasant and never grating…

Rock / Progressive Rock / Symphonic Rock

A 75-minute symphonic progressive rock, sung in English for the first time in the history of the band, which ranges from baroque sections to other ones more dreamy and atmospheric. Nuova era was one of my favourite bands from the 90s and their 1992 masterpiece "Io e il tempo" I still hold as one of my favourite albums of all time. About 20 years after their last proper album, "Il passo del soldato" from 1995, they release a new album! The titel is in english, as are all the songs. Let me get back to that. The music on the album is like the band never left and continued playing and recording their music, this album could easily have been a follow up a couple of years later after their last album. The sound is almost the same, lots of keyboards dominating the music with additional guitars.

I can't give this album anything less than 5 stars, for my taste this is flawless. The guitar driven aggressive passages, contrasted with the beautiful mellow sections that have mellotron at times, are simply gorgeous. There's nothing about the music here that I don't like, and that's rare for me. The organ, flute, fantastic drumming and throbbing bass are all played and arranged perfectly. I do have a problem with the album cover though. Haha. It reminds me of history class, although it is humerous I suppose.
"Primo Tempo" opens with guitar sounding more like BLACK SABBATH than a Symphonic Italian band. I love it ! Ripping organ and pounding drums have me saying "What the heck ?". These heavy passages are contrasted with beautiful pastoral ones with reserved vocals and floating organ sounds. Scorching guitar comes and goes while we get some fat bass lines. Some flute and acoustic guitar 4 1/2 minutes in. Those dark heavy guitar melodies with sinister organ runs are back 7 minutes in. Big drum ending. "Seconde Tempo" opens with gentle guitar as percussion and flute join in. The sound builds. Some catchy flute melodies in this one as well as French horn. The guitar suddenly comes crashing in after 3 minutes to end it.

Early this coming year, progressive rock fans will be delighted with the release of the highly-anticipated new Fabio Zuffanti project, entitled “La Quarta Vittima” (“The Fourth Victim”). The year (2014) marks the twentieth year of musical performance for Fabio, so he has constructed a modern masterpiece whose magnificence lies in being the sum of the unique amalgam of his diverse experiences (most noteably with Finisterre, Maschera Di Cera, Quadraphonic and Hostsonaten, as well as numerous well-received solo albums and projects). “La Quarta Vittima” is an album of modern progressive rock gems, encompassing elements of symphonic, dark, jazz, hard rock, electronic and psychedelic, presented in a unique musical kaleidoscope.

"The sun light the shadows, hurricane is just passed on. I come back to my town, alone and with pain. I do not see my people, roads are desert, I look around me and see life is going away…"
One of the most incredible treasures of the many released in Italy during the seventies. Alphataurus was a very talented (and obscure) band made of five elements arounf the main figure and role of Pietro Pellegrini on piano, organ, moog, vibraphone and spinet. The musicianship is at highest peaks, very captivating and convincing.

Italian band TUGS was formed sometime in the 1970's, but in their initial phase that lasted until the mid 1980's they didn't manage to record any material. Some 20 odd years later Tugs reunited, and work commenced to finalize and record the material they had created when they first started out. Come 2013 and this process was finalized with the release of their debut album "Europa Minor" on the Italian AMS label. One thing that struck me when listening to this album was the frequent use of piano textures, especially on the first ten of the twelve tracks. A detail that generally makes me suspect that many of the compositions started out as piano creations that have later been expanded with arrangements of a more sophisticated nature. If this is the case for this band as well I don't know, but it was a distinct association I got on many of these songs.
