Although it seemed to arrive out of nowhere in the early '90s, ambient music actually has a long and varied history, leading back to Brian Eno and Kraftwerk's electronic experiments in the 1970s, right up to Aphex Twin's textural techno soundscapes. As an introduction and history lesson, the two-disc A Brief History of Ambient Music can't be beat; it shows that the ambient-techno trend has roots that most fans wouldn't even realize existed.
In East Germany in the early 1970’s Martin Zeichnete worked as a sound editor for DEFA, (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), the state-owned film studio. Like many young East Germans of the time he would listen furtively to West German radio at night and became infatuated with the Kosmische Musik or ‘Krautrock’ epitomised by the likes of Kraftwerk, Neu! and Cluster emerging from his neighbouring country. Martin, a keen runner, hit upon the idea of using the repetitive, motorik beats of this new music as a training aid for athletes. He thought it could benefit the mind as well as the body with the pulsing, hypnotic music bringing focus. A ‘borrowed’ prototype of Andreas Pavel’s Stereobelt showed Martin the technology to provide music on the move already existed and could easily be adapted for runners.

NON co-founder Chino Amobi heads up one of the label collective’s definitive releases, Airport Music For Black Folk; presenting his radical perspective on contemporary electronic music and his impressions of “the airport as an international space and yet a totally Eurocentric & Western manicured experience.” The title is an obvious, punning reference to Brain Eno’s classic ambient cornerstone, Music For Airports, but takes on greater meaning when filtered thru Amobi’s personal cultural coordinates, cannily incorporating his stance as a first-generation Nigerian who grew up in Virginia, US of A, as well as that of a convention-challenging and highly critical artist boldly holding a mirror up to western, white privilege.
