Unfolding in a series of eight mythic vignettes, this late work by Akira Kurosawa was inspired by the beloved director’s own nighttime visions, along with stories from Japanese folklore. In a visually sumptuous journey through the master’s imagination, tales of childlike wonder give way to apocalyptic apparitions: a young boy stumbles on a fox wedding in a forest; a soldier confronts the ghosts of the war dead; a power plant meltdown smothers a seaside landscape in radioactive fumes. Interspersed with reflections on the redemptive power of creation, including a richly textured tribute to Vincent van Gogh (who is played by Martin Scorsese), Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams is both a showcase for its maker’s artistry at its most unbridled and a deeply personal lament for a world at the mercy of human ignorance.

Akira Ifukube was a Japanese composer of classical music and film scores, perhaps best known for his work on the soundtracks of the Godzilla movies by Toho. Despite his financial success as a film composer, Ifukube's first love had always been his general classical work as a composer. In fact his compositions for the two genres cross-fertilized each other. He also published Orchestration, a 1,000-page book on theory.

This remastered reissue of Akira Kosemura's second solo album Tiny Musical (originally released in 2008) seemingly straddles two worlds. On the one hand, certain tracks (“Sky,” “Shorebird,” “Remembrance”) position the release squarely within the electronica tradition; on the other, there are acoustic settings shorn of anything electronica-related (“Light Dance,” “Moon,” “Smile”) that are more representative of the style Kosemura's been pursuing on recent releases. At the risk of oversimplifying things, the electronica pieces feel more like the work of a now-past era, whereas those featuring acoustic piano are more timeless by comparison.

“Most directors have one film for which they are known or possibly two,” said Francis Ford Coppola. “Akira Kurosawa has eight or nine.” Through masterpieces such as Kagemusha, Seven Samurai, and High and Low, Akira Kurosawa (1910–98) influenced directors from George Lucas and Steven Spielberg to Martin Scorsese, and his groundbreaking innovations in cinematography and editing, combined with his storytelling, made him a cinematic icon.
