This is useful, and confounding. This is truly a Blue Öyster Cult singles comp, but not in the usual sense. Over 20 tracks, it rounds up BÖC singles released all over the world, which keeps it from being just another best-of. For instance, take the final cut: "Astronomy." This is not the original released on Secret Treaties but the redone version issued on Imaginos issued in 1988 and a single distributed only in the U.K. and Holland. And so it goes with this thing. …

The most commercially successful pop group of the 1970s, the origins of the Swedish superstars ABBA dated back to 1966, when keyboardist and vocalist Benny Andersson, a onetime member of the popular beat outfit the Hep Stars, first teamed with guitarist and vocalist Bjorn Ulvaeus, the leader of the folk-rock unit the Hootenanny Singers. The two performers began composing songs together and handling session and production work for Polar Music/Union Songs, a publishing company owned by Stig Anderson, himself a prolific songwriter throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

Al Martino was one of the illustrious coterie of Italian-American crooners who played such a huge part in popular music during the post-war decades and which included the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Frankie Laine, Tony Martin and others. Encouraged by family friend, another great Italian-American singer, Mario Lanza, he became a singer after service in WWII, performing in clubs and making obscure records for Jubilee, before winning the highly influential Arthur Godfreys Talent Scouts TV show, leading to a recording contract for the independent BBS label and a debut single with Here In My Heart, soon picked up by Capitol.

After a steller career of coloborations with some of the greatest vocalists of the 20th Century(longest with Sinatra), Nelson Riddle was invited to cut a couple of albums for MPS, in Vegas, in 1971. The easy listening orchestras and conductors were begining to be replaced by Soft Rock. The 20 selections on this disc are the result of the combined("Communication" and "Changing Colors")albums. The orchestrations and sound quality are first rate. Nice arragements of "My Sweet Lord" and "Close to You" and Jobims "Corcovado", are the only songs familar to me. The unfamilar material is what attracted me. A few songs are penned by Riddle himself. The general feel throughout is upbeat. I've listened several times and lamented the discs' conclusion. Riddles orchestral canvas of just the right instrumentation is sensational. For a collector wanting to add a later Riddle sound to their earlier Capital hits(Route 66, etc.), needs to have a look at this set.

The titles of hits compilations always deal in superlatives: "Greatest," "Best," "Very Best" – but the compilers of this ABBA collection have a special problem justifying the release of yet another such album after the multi-platinum success of 1992's ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits and its 1993 follow-up, More ABBA Gold: More ABBA Hits. (Indeed, the band was never shy about repackaging, issuing a Greatest Hits LP in 1976 as only its third U.S. album, followed by Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 in 1979 and The Singles [The First Ten Years] in 1982.) They have settled on The Definitive Collection and done their best to live up to the name. The 37-track double CD contains "for the first time exclusively collected in one package…
