Liz and Helen, a mod-Gothic mystery from Riccardo Freda, has some points in common with one of the director's earlier films, The Horrible Dr. Hichcock. Each concerns a man who believes his wife to be deceased, only to be confronted by creepy evidence to contrary. Then, too, there's the extravagant, romantic atmosphere, thunderstorms, and lurid melodramatic scenes.

Jun arrives in Hong Kong from mainland China, hoping to be able to earn enough money to marry his girlfriend back home. He meets the streetwise Qiao and they become friends. As friendship turns into love, problems develop, and although they seem meant for each other they somehow keep missing out.
Only the few of those movies about 1997 I find interesting and this movie is the one among them, and perhaps also the best among them. Through a love story, it shows something people should remember about hongkong before 1997. It's not a job that documentary can do well because the emphasis here is on emotion. Maggie Cheung performs very well in this movie and the role she plays successfully shows some typical values of hongkong in the past. Deep down what she values above all else is emotion although she looks crazy for money. Her going to New York is the part very moving. Peter Chan very often has a kind of "soft" power guiding audience to enter into the story and this power is applied perfectly in this movie. Several years have passed since the first time I saw this movie, and therefore I think I can give a sufficiently fair verdict - it's a real classic. Don't miss it.

This short, an Oscar winner, is an exceptionally detailed effort that can be a bit unsettling at first (particularly for anyone who has problems with depth-perception), but is a fascinatingly drawn and meticulously constructed animation and is a must-see if you like animation. Fortunately, it is currently in-print. Most highly recommended.

Called the “Young, Sexy, Sassy Version of Wavy Gravy,” “Ani diFranco on Pep Pills,” and “The Doyenne of Fun Rock,” Liz O is nothing if not a study in contrasts. Whether serving cupcakes in a bar, or setting fire to a pony pinata on a beach, she is equal parts innocent and indecent, rebellious and sweet, soulful and spectacular. Her songs are a purely original blend of music; colorful stories rooted in rhythmic blues, with a punk, feisty delivery. Liz O’s comedic persona and penchant for themed theatricality have earned her a fun-loving fanbase across the U.S.A. She has headlined at countless venues around the Bay Area, including Cafe du Nord, Brick and Mortar Music Hall, and the New Parish.

Doc Pomus was the most unlikely of rock & roll icons. Paralyzed with polio as a child, Brooklyn-born Jerome Felder reinvented himself first as a blues singer, renaming himself Doc Pomus, then as a songwriter, creating some of the greatest hits of the early rock and roll era: "Save the Last Dance for Me," "This Magic Moment," "A Teenager in Love," "Viva Las Vegas," and a thousand others.
