Hip-O's Gold: '80s Metal provides two full discs of spandex anthems than run the gamut from brooding progressive rock (Queensrÿche's "Eyes of a Stranger") to sleazy hair metal (Bulletboys' "Smooth Up in Ya"). The compilation covers an awful lot of ground (Kingdom Come, Dangerous Toys, Bang Tango), but there are enough Headbanger's Ball classics here, like Accept's "Balls to the Wall", Winger's "Seventeen", Warrant's "Cherry Pie", and most importantly Autograph's "Turn Up the Radio", to satisfy the masses.

Boney M. – Gold : 20 Super Hits

Another of Frank Farian's brainchild, the sound of Boney M. has made quite an indelible mark on the disco & dance genre. The group, seemingly, has four members - Bobby Farrell, Maizie Williams, Liz Mitchell, and Marcia Barrett - but really, all the songs have been sung by only the last two female artists; the bassy male voice that you hear on the tracks was actually created in the studio by Farian. Farian also directly contributed to the female chorus by adding his own vocals in high falsetto. So, what was Bobby Farrell doing in the group, you might think. Well …he was there for visual stimulation, and lip-synching during the live shows. Supposedly, he did actually sing in some of the live shows. Oh …did Milli Vanilli just come to the mind? It should and it shouldn't. Because that's what Farian does in all his acts - hire out-of-work models to be the public face of his musical projects - and since he always uses this trick, it is not worth paying attention to. So, download, and enjoy the music without thinking about who's singing what. There's no doubt Farian has a knack for creating catchy tunes, and it's all that matters. One thing I've always wondered, though, is what was with all those sleazy album covers suggesting acts of sexual bondage and sadism!!!

Label: Cypress Records / Gold Castle Records (USA) | Released: 1990-03-27

A thoroughly entertaining set mixing energetic dance-pop numbers with ponderous adult contemporary ballads, Show Off stands out for two reasons: one, Lori Ruso's simultaneously rockin' and gorgeous vocals; two, solid arrangements that don't strictly adhere to normal protocol of late-'80s/early-'90s Top 40 material. True, the melodies have "1989" written all through them - in fact, many seem like they would fit perfectly into silver screen flicks of the time. But Ruso has a classically tinted belting style that gives each tune a distinctive stamp, and she is consistently in tandem with the equally vibrant backing musicians.

The 80s was the decade of the 12 inch. In the UK, all previous instalments of this series sold extremely well and received widespread critical acclaim. The Guardian called the series a "genuine act of music archaeology". From the pop dance genius of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax and Donna Summer's I Feel Love through to the more alternative Lullaby by The Cure, and onto classics such as Teardrops by Womack & Womack… This 3CD compilation has it all, in its full 12" glory.

Universal Music Presents The Power Of The 80s, includes another Pop, Disco, Synth-Pop, RnB, Soul. When Support artists Bon Jovi, Cutting Crew, Mr. Mister, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Cher, Bonnie Tyler, Roxy Music, Danny Wilson, Joe Jackson, Soul II Soul filled with the contrast of this selection. In retrospect, it became clear that the music following punk could be divided, more or less, into two categories disco and new wave. Where disco was arty, difficult, and challenging, new wave was pop music. The 1980s saw the emergence of dance music and new wave. As disco fell out of fashion in the decade's early years, genres such as post-disco, Italo disco, Euro disco and dance-pop became more popular.

UK three CD collection. This release charts the birth of synthesized pop music in the 1980s and ultimately the roots of contemporary electronic dance music. The importance and continued popularity of '80s pop is not to be underestimated, and the emergence of serious synthesized music producers in Kraftwerk, the Human League, Heaven 17, OMD, Yazoo, Ultravox, Talk Talk, Japan, Devo, Sparks, Gary Numan, New Order and the Pet Shop Boys, all of whom massively pushed the boundaries in experimenting with (mainly) Roland synths in this era, ultimately showed the way for the House and Techno producers of the '90s to the present day. Within this more serious side there was also some brilliant, pure Synthpop from the Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Thomas Dolby, Simple Minds, Propaganda, Erasure, China Crisis, Belouis Some, the Lotus Eaters, a Flock of Seagulls, Howard Jones, Blancmange and the Associates.
