On his last couple of Warner Bros albums, Gorilla and In the Pocket, James Taylor seemed to be converting himself from the shrinking violet, too-sensitive-to-live "rainy day man" of his early records into a mainstream, easy listening crooner with a sunny outlook. JT, his debut album for Columbia, was something of a defense of this conversion.

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Brother JT (aka John Terlesky) combines classic psychedelic pop elements with unique and often spiritual lyrics. While his solo efforts are usually low-key affairs, he often teams up with Vibrolux for a louder, more rock-oriented version of the Brother JT sound. Terlesky played in Philadelphia's garage rock group Original Sins from the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s, and Vibrolux includes members of other local, psychedelically inspired groups, such as Art Difuria of the Photon Band (who also worked with Kurt Heasley of the Lilys).

The JT Project: a multi-talented force of sound that brings forth a unique musical conceptualization: 'a new genre in music called JT'. Adventurous and bold, Jacob Webb (Keyboards/Bass) and Todd Schefflin (Saxophone), leaders of The JT Project, knew that it would take more than just a passing interest in music to become the creative force that they envisioned. Jacob commands each stroke on the keyboard to awaken the soul with a touch of fire, and Todd caresses the notes to life with every breath. Todd hailing from Philadelphia, and Jacob from Kansas City, the two musician's paths collided in 2007 at the prestigious William Paterson University music department in New Jersey. After an immediate musical connection, Jacob and Todd started writing music together, which eventually led to the formation of The JT Project in 2009. The JT Project has exponentially expanded into a musical collective, incorporating the most talented Jazz and Soul musicians in New York City.

JT, his debut album for Columbia, was something of a defense of this conversion. Returning to the autobiographical, Taylor declared his love for Carly Simon ("There We Are"), but expressed some surprise at his domestic bliss. "Isn't it amazing a man like me can feel this way?" he sang in the opening song, "Your Smiling Face" (a Top 40 hit). At the same time, domesticity could have its temporary depressions ("Another Grey Morning"). The key track was "Secret O' Life," which Taylor revealed as "enjoying the passage of time." Working with his long-time backup band of Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, and Russell Kunkel, and with Peter Asher back in the producer's chair, Taylor also enjoyed mixing his patented acoustic guitar-based folk sound with elements of rock, blues, and country.

The JT LeRoy scandal is a story of our times. In January 2006, the New York Times unmasked Savannah Knoop as the face of the mysterious author JT LeRoy. A media frenzy ensued as JT’s fans, mentors, and readers came to terms with the fact that the gay-male-ex-truck-stop-prostitute-turned literary-wunderkind was really a girl from San Francisco, whose sister-in-law wrote the books.
