Band on the Run is generally considered Paul McCartney's strongest solo effort. The album was also his most commercially successful, selling well and spawning two hit singles, the multi-part pop suite of the title track and the roaring rocker "Jet." On these cuts and elsewhere, McCartney's penchant for sophisticated, nuanced arrangements and irrepressibly catchy melodic hooks is up to the caliber he displayed in the Beatles, far surpassing the first two Wings releases Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway…

Technically, All the Best was the first compilation of McCartney's solo material, since Wings Greatest covered songs released under the Wings aegis. Well, there is considerable overlap between the two records – no less than ten of that album's 12 songs are here, yet only the hard-rocking "Hi Hi Hi" is truly missed – although the seven new songs do give this album a different character, for better or worse…

All right, he's made a record with his wife and a record with his pickup band where democracy is allegedly the conceit even if it never sounds that way, so he returns to a solo effort, making the most disjointed album he ever cut. There's a certain fascination to its fragmented nature, not just because it's decidedly on the softer side of things, but because his desire for homegrown eccentricity has been fused with his inclination for bombastic art rock à la Abbey Roa…

If there's one thing the career of Frank Sinatra has shown, it's that great taste is indeed timeless. In the post-Beatles Sixties, it had begun to look like Sinatra's star was falling. The revitalized world of rock music knocked Sinatra's style of popular song squarely out of the box in terms of public interest. The level of Sinatra's artistry, however, never diminished during this period, and it wasn't long before he made his commercial comeback with "Strangers In The Night"…

This classic Neville Brothers album, the group's second release, was issued in 1981 and is chock full of guests, including a then-unknown 18-year-old Whitney Houston (and her mother Cissy) on background vocals and musicians such as Dr. John, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and a cappella group The Persuasions. Rolling Stone included Fiyo On The Bayou at number 66 on its list of the 100 best albums of the 1980s and Keith Richards called it the best album of 1981.
