In the mid-60s, on the commercial peak of Jazz, Roy Meriwether signed to Columbia Records whole roster boasted such great artists as Dave Brubeck and Erroll Garner. Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968 the third installment from Neil Young's Archives although through some weird filing system this is Vol. 00, possibly because this dates before either of the previously released volumes in Archives Performance Series culls highlights from Neil Young's two shows at Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, MI on November 9 and 10, 1968. Like its two predecessors in the Archives series, the concerts captured on Sugar Mountain are legendary among Neil Young collectors, in this case because of the gentle, tentative version of the title track that showed up on Decade prior to this, the only official release from the concert.

A monster album, the one that put them back in the spotlight and signaled that Norman Whitfield had saved the day. Damon Harris had replaced Eddie Kendricks, and there were many doubters convinced the band was finished. Instead, Whitfield revitalized them via the majestic single, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone." Despite its length, Whitfield's decision to open with an extensive, multi-layered musical suite and tease listeners was a master stroke. By the time Dennis Edwards' voice came rushing in, no one would dare turn it off. The single, as well as "Law of the Land" and others, ended the funeral arrangements that had been prepared for the Temptations.

With everything the Temptations released pretty much guaranteed to turn to gold, not to mention platinum, even their tripped-out forays into sweet '60s psychedelic experimentation were sure to fire a string of hits. 1970's Norman Whitfield-produced Psychedelic Shack while perhaps a system shock to those fans who grooved to the band's lame-suited, Motown dance-routined R&B classics was a magnificent stretch into an epic that ultimately emerged as another in a long line of enduring sets.

In August-September 1966 the Pop quartet calling themselves The Sidekicks (John Spirt, Mike Burke and brothers Zack (vocalist) and Randy Bocelle) - not to be confused with a Punk Rock band of the same name - scored their only nationally charting single when Suspicions (written by Spirt and Burke) managed to make it to # 55 Billboard Pop Hot 100, b/w a nice cover of The Drifters' huge 1963 hit Up On The Roof, as RCA Victor 47-8864. That modest success earned them the album you see covered here titled "Fifi The Flea".

Within a one-month period the Oscar Peterson Trio (with bassist Ray Brown and their new drummer Ed Thigpen) recorded nine different Songbook, 108 selections in all. Not too surprisingly, this music had a minimum of prior planning and few arranged passages, putting it on a lower level than the typical music played by Peterson's prior trio with guitarist Herb Ellis. The 12 numbers performed for the Jerome Kern album are given melodic and consistently swinging treatments with such songs as 'I Won't Dance,' 'The Song Is You,' and 'Pick Yourself Up' among the better selections heard on this pleasing program.

This album features Lionel Hampton's first concert at the Newport Jazz Festival and overall is quite exciting. Hampton gathered together an all-star alumni band that, in addition to trombonist Al Grey, Frank Foster on tenor and a couple of appearances by pianist Milt Buckner, boasts the extraordinary trumpet section of Snooky Young, Jimmy Nottingham, Joe Newman and Wallace Davenport. The climax is provided on Hamp's perennial "Flying Home" which finds Illinois Jacquet reprising and then extending his famous solo.
