A career that resulted in more than 250 recordings and 25 million records sold is just part of the Ella Fitzgerald story. Bing Crosby once famously called her "the greatest singer of them all - man, woman or child", confirming that she overcame a lack of formal musical training to establish herself as a singer of true stature, respected by her peers. Featured here are 49 of her greatest recordings from the American Songbook.

It is hard to overestimate the importance of Fank Sinatra in the development of American Music. The recordings featured here were all recorded in the 1950s. The composers Frank favoured in this period were those who compiled what we now know as the American Songbook: The Gershwins, Cole Porter, Rodgers And Hart, Arlen And Harburg… Ol' Blue Eyes was setting standards the likes of Rod Stewart today can only dream of approaching.

Ethel Ennis first won national recognition for her recording “Lullaby for Losers” in 1955. In 1958, she was selected by Benny Goodman as the female vocalist for his all-star band. Later, she was chosen as a featured singer on the Arthur Godfrey Show. After performing at the 1964 Newport Jazz Festival with Billy Taylor, Cozy Cole, and Slam Stewart, she appeared with Duke Ellington and his Orchestra on television's “Bell Telephone Hour.” She followed those amazing achievements by wowing them at the Monterey Jazz Festival in duets with Joe Williams. She returned to her hometown to perform in concerts with the Count Basie Band and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. During that same period, she shared the bill with Cab Calloway at Harlem's Apollo Theater and played supper clubs and concert halls all over the country.

Like many a pop singer, Stewart returns here to what's become generally known as the Great American Songbook, that evergreen body of mid-20th century songcraft that continues to inspire singers across oceans and generations. It's said that Stewart has been vocalizing many of these songs in private for years, and given the warm, human scale of most of the performances here, it's not hard to believe. Producer Phil Ramone's spare, unobtrusive arrangements inspire the singer to some of his most subtle and rewarding performances in years. Stewart's slightly weary vocal tack handsomely suggests the smoke, booze, and aching heart that lie at the best of these songs. Such back-to-the-future efforts can often sound like a last career gasp; here, they seem a refreshing breath of fresh air.
