The 24 Inventions for harpsichord by the British composer Stephen Dodgson (1924-2013) were composed over a period of some forty years. Dodgson knew of course the works of the reinventers of the harpsichord in the 20th century, including Falla, Poulenc, Martin, Martinů, Henze or Stravinski (in his Rake 's Progress), and then witnessed the decline of the enthusiasm of new composers for the " Instrument - too linked to a certain neoclassicism that had lived? The first volume of Dodgson's Inventions, published in 1955, was designed for the modern harpsichord, heavy machines with a metal frame, a mechanism closer to that of the piano, a very peculiar sound.

Harpsichordist Thomas Ragossnig devotes this recording to Bach's Inventions and Sinfonias, delivered in an altered order from the typical ascending scale arrangement. Ragossnig presents his musically more meaningful and attractive sequence on this album for the first time, mixing the Inventions and Sinfonias in the same key and performing them in groups of two or four. The result is an exciting programme that provides an opportunity to linger longer in each key, as in a Baroque suite. Ragossnig zestfully interprets the various musical affections in these miniatures, so that these complex works function as a meaningful and stimulating cycle and not only as contrapuntal references.

This is a superb recording of the Two-Part and Sinfonias (Three-Part Inventions) of Johann Sebastian Bach. Kenneth Gilbert is a wonderful interpreter of Bach's keyboard music and in this recording plays an instrument made in 1671 by Jan Couchet that was subsequently enlarged in 1778. The Two-Part Inventions and Sinfonias consist of 15 parts; they were written as technical exercises and as composition demonstration pieces originally for his son Wilhelm Friedemann. The various pieces were probably written separately and were gathered together by Bach in major/minor key sequence and published in 1723. The recording is clear and well balanced. Kenneth Gilbert plays beautifully; the music is lively without being ostentatious.

The young, virtuoso a cappella ensemble VOCES8 return to disc on Signum with a sumptuous collection of early works by Henry Purcell, one of England’s greatest composers. Joined by the specialist early music ensemble ‘Les Inventions’, the group explores Purcell’s astoundingly diverse output. There is hardly a genre in which he did not express himself: anthems, odes, funeral music, semi–operas, masques, sonatas, consort–music, songs and catches populate his extraordinarily multifaceted oeuvre. It is this astonishing diversity that Signum and VOCES8 celebrate.

Herbie Hancock was only 23 when he recorded the amazing Inventions & Dimensions, his third Blue Note album. Although Hancock had already recorded Takin' Off and My Point Of View, he had quickly developed his own innovative style, and was about to become a member of the Miles Davis Quintet. Inventions and Dimensions is unlike anything he had previously created.
