On his fourth recording for harmonia mundi, GRAMMY-nominated conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in an all-orchestral program featuring Witold Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra and Arnold Schoenberg's orchestration of Brahms's Piano Quartet No.1. With its use of folk melodies to generate tremendous momentum and dramatic impact, the Concerto for Orchestra established Lutoslawski as Poland's leading contemporary composer. Harth-Bedoya couples this powerful and complex score with Schoenberg's rich and colorful arrangement of one of Brahms's most popular chamber works.

Brahms never made a secret of the inspiration he drew from the Beethoven symphonies, but before he published his first symphony - inspired by Beethoven's fifth and ninth - he had struggled for no less than fourteen years with it. In the meantime he wrote many more pieces and his Variations on a theme by Haydn are considered to be a preliminary exercise before venturing on to the first symphony. The opening piece of this recording, the Hungarian Dance No. 14, goes back to Brahms as a young cafe pianist, when he and his father earned a bit on the side in bars in the red-light district of Hamburg and where he first heard Hungarian gipsy music. It was this experience that gave birth to Brahms' lifelong attachment to and admiration for this rich folk music style.

In his time, Bruckner was understood and admired only within a small circle, a handful of advocates of his music, both pupils and Wagnerites. As Bruckner worked on the Adagio, the emotional heart of the Seventh Symphony, he heard news of the death of his idol Richard Wagner, and instantly decided to dedicate it to his remembrance.

In 1878 Édouard Lalo wrote to the Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate: ‘Your arrival in my life has been my greatest artistic opportunity… without you, I would have continued to write insignificant odds and ends’. The three works gathered here all spring from this arrival, beginning with the Violin Concerto, composed in 1873. The melodious and charming concerto held a great significance for the composer, who regarded it as his first work truly worthy of the name. In the eye of the public it was soon to be overshadowed, however.

The finest recordings of these works available! The Brazilian composer (we needn't remind his most ardent supporters that he's the most significant Latin American composer of all time) behind numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works lets his creative genius show on Choros (from the Portuguese verb chorar , "to weep") Nos. 1-12 and Bachianas Brasileiras ("Brazilian Bach-pieces") Nos. 1-9. Also includes a bonus disc of solo guitar music played by the distinguished Anders Miolin. Great notes in the booklet, too…highly recommended! - Gramophone Magazine

A great lost date from the wonderful Gigi Gryce – a set that features the altoist in an sextet, but often swinging with a looser vibe than on some of his better-known albums from the 50s! There's a mix of soulful and modern here that's not unlike the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet – both players of Gryce's same postwar generation, and coincidentally recording for Mercury at the same time. Although the groove here is definitely different – less emphasis on the bottom, and more on the top – not just Gryce's wonderfully raspy alto, but also the trumpet of Richard Williams too. All other players are great as well – and Eddie Costa brings in some sweet vibes – in a lineup that also features Richard Wyands on piano, and either Reggie Workman or George Duvivier on bass, and either Walter Perkins or Bob Thomas on drums. Tracks include "Reminiscing", "Gee Blues Gee", "Blue Light", and "Night In Tunisia".
